My process is simple I look at my surroundings and become inspired by the colors, the landscape, the animals, and the energy of what is surrounding me.
I love the task of putting my thread through the eye of a needle, hearing the sound as the needle pops though the tightly pulled cotton fabric, the feel of the thread as it slips though my fingers to create the work that you see before you. I love that everything about creating embroidery is touch, every inch of the work has passed though my hands.
Different textures and depths are added with the use of watercolor, acrylic paints, and burlap to represent water, sky, and land. My embroidery is far from being fast-paced work, it is slow and deliberate, done in the lobby of a dance studio, in the waiting room of a doctors office, and the front seat of my car, moments stolen in the time of waiting, entire days lost in the world of creating make believe landscapes and memories all rolled into one. It often depicts a world that I long to escape into, a place that only exists in my mind where the slowness of the process makes sense, takes me away from the fast moving world surrounding me in real time.
My work is inspired by places I lived as a child into my adult life, it is a combination of real life and dreams. The colors are often chosen on a whim adding to the whimsical feel and look of my work. In this world of instant gratification, the idea of slow going work is forgotten, it is my longing to share that some times the slow-paced work helps you to sit in the now and enjoy what you have around you.
